REVELATION 6:5,6 = THE THIRD HORSEMAN

5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.  EXEGESIS of the passage
First, again we must keep in mind that the number '4' of the 'four horsemen', symbolises '4 periods of time', as we have seen in the exegesis of Rev.6:2,3.
Second, we recognise that the first horseman was an archer, a howman of himself. The 'bow' was not given to him, it owned him. And that the second horseman was a man of discord, of dissension, hate and violence. Now this third horseman is characterized by miserlyness, stinginess, by whom exist shortage and by which it is necessary to have faith to stay alive and not become a victim of starvation because of lack.
Third, we see the first horseman had a bow and was given a 'crown'. The second horseman had a lot of envy and hatred for Gods creation and was given 1. power to stir up envy with the people of the West and for the purpose of killing each other on a massive scale, him was given 2. also a 'great sword'. And now we have the third horseman with the balances, who was given to take away blessings over the farmland. All three instruments they possessed were of importance to practice not to make war. David had faith and got a big sword but could not handle the sword but practiced what he was, full of faith in Gods goodness. He had not 'big' stones but 'great' smooth stones. The importance lies in the frightfullness and awfullness of the things they possess and used those to influence their caracter on people.
Fourth, the horsemen were according to their nature. The first horseman with the bow only wanted to qonquer land and more land according to Roman tradition. The second horseman wanted to sow more and more deadly hatred under all people as Gods creation, so that murder would not to be averted, inevitable, in a common society. Now, the third horseman with the balances in his hand was a miser, niggard, skinflint of caracter, so that people would be killed by starvation.
Fifth, their was no war with the horsemen to aim their goals! The only interest was to kill as many people as possible by means of their caracter. The color of the horses are meant to symbolise the periode of time caracterized with: 1. qonquering as many land and people under one king; 2. killing people by irritation; 3. killing people by starvation. The Hand of God gives way to the devil, who wants to destroy everthing if he gets the power for it by God!
Sixth there was said to John the apostel: 'come and see' and not spoken to each of the the horsemen: 'come' or 'come out' as other translations have. Unless we are told to see something we cannot see the purposes of God, nor on Earth nor in Heaven. When the fifth seal was opened John was in spirit in Heaven and no new vision was showed to him, so there was also no speaking± ´come and see´, but he could still see the Throne of God and saw underneath was was happening with those believers who were dead already!

 HERMENEUTICS of the passage
It is striking that here the Lion of Juda, Christ Himself as Gods Judgement for mankind, is speaking out of the midst of the Throne of God. He is Lord of everything and He is managing the Great Oppression! Very encouraging for Christ followers and those who put their faith in Christ, they will not be let down by their Lord! He will provide them with the necessary food as with the miracle of the five loafs.

Why this starvation? And why to the south of the Earth? It must be "as the stream of Christianity flows further from its pure fountain, it becomes more and more corrupt. During the progress of this black horse, the necessaries of life should be at excessive prices, and the more costly things as oil and wine, should not be hurt. According to prophetic language, the oil and wine are articles signifying the food of religious knowledge, by which the souls of men are sustained unto everlasting life; such we are invited to buy, Isa 55:1. But when the dark clouds of ignorance and superstition, denoted by the black horse, spread over the Christian world, the knowledge and practice of true religion became scarce. When a people loathe their spiritual food, God may justly deprive them of their daily bread. The famine of bread is a terrible judgment; but the famine of the word is more so." (Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary)

Why not to hurt oil and wine? These liquids are symbolising the Spirit of God Who heals the soul. So, repentence is still possible by the presence of the Holy Spirit where there is a calling upon the Lord! Oil and wine are also used for healing wounds. Oil and wine is holy for God and a sign for the people that God is still in charge.
Idolatry, idol worship is also a reason for a curse on harvest, as apostasy in the West is a reason for envy because of yielding of peace and blessing that faith gives. By this we can see more clearly that the white horse is a period of faith going along with qonquering countries like of the indians in the North and South of the 'New World'.

John Wesley's Notes on Rev. 6:4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6:5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature - Toward the south. Saying, Come. And behold a black horse - A fit emblem of mourning and distress; particularly of black famine, as the ancient poets term it. And he that sat on him had a pair of scales in his hand - When there is great plenty, men scarce think it worth their while to weigh and measure everything, Gen 41:49. But when there is scarcity, they are obliged to deliver them out by measure and weight, Eze 4:16. Accordingly, these scales signify scarcity. They serve also for a token, that all the fruits of the earth, and consequently the whole heavens, with their courses and influences; that all the seasons of the year, with whatsoever they produce, in nature or states, are subject to Christ. Accordingly his hand is wonderful, not only in wars and victories, but likewise in the whole course of nature.

6:6 And I heard a voice - It seems, from God himself. Saying - To the horseman, Hitherto shalt thou come, and no farther. Let there be a measure of wheat for a penny - The word translated measure, was a Grecian measure, nearly equal to our quart. This was the daily allowance of a slave. The Roman penny, as much as a labourer then earned in a day, was about sevenpence halfpenny English. According to this, wheat would be near twenty shillings per bushel. This must have been fulfilled while the Grecian measure and the Roman money were still in use; as also where that measure was the common measure, and this money the current coin. It was so in Egypt under Trajan. And three measures of barley for a penny - Either barley was, in common, far cheaper among the ancients than wheat, or the prophecy mentions this as something peculiar. And hurt not the oil and the wine - Let there not be a scarcity of everything. Let there be some provision left to supply the want of the rest This was also fulfilled in the reign of Trajan, especially in Egypt, which lay southward from Patmos. In this country, which used to be the granary of the empire, there was an uncommon dearth at the very beginning of his reign; so that he was obliged to supply Egypt itself with corn from other countries. The same scarcity there was in the thirteenth year of his reign, the harvest failing for want of the rising of the Nile: and that not only in Egypt, but in all those other parts of Afric, where the Nile uses to overflow.

General Note: - Let us remind that the 'saels of this Revelation of Christ(!) to John', are opened because of the lack of interest for the Saving Gospel of Christ in the world and that this Gospel has been witnessed almost all over the world to ever culture, language, country and tribe! That the Great Oppression is now comming over this world is because of the 'Great Falling Away' of believers in Christ, according to Paul! Therefore The protecting Hand of God gives way of the people of the whole Earth! So, the 'horse' of every horseman symbolizes according to Jeremia 5:8 'carnal desires' or 'in virtue of oneself'. In contrast with the peacefull donkey the horse is with his rider the symbol of mastery and dominion. We think of the horses used by the police in riots or by military in cavalry. Here the horse are associated with a ongoing timeline till the End.

Note 1: - Black is the color of the night, of distruction, of mourning and especially of the death and the hades. Black is also the no light reflecting color of everlasting darkness, sin and the devil. Black clothing refer to do penance and mourning garb. The color of the horse in each case seems to answer the 'mission' of the rider.

Note 2: - This black horseman has his mission in collecting people from the South by starvation caused by having a shortage of wheat and barley. The 'white horseman' was more interested in qonquering new far away territories to the East, establishing this with treaties more than actually with war by killing people in bloodshed. He was actually collecting people of the nations under the rule of Rome from where the Gospel came over the Earth. The 'red horseman' actually has his 'mission' of bloodshed but now concerning the West of the world.
Note 3: - Out of the midst of the Throne came a voice! We know that Christ was on Gods Throne. So, we understand that He it is Who makes the rule og Grace even now, there will still be food, but verry scarce. This makes the times evident: otherwise it would be true, as the wise man says, that whoever withholds the grain will be cursed by the people; Pr.11:26.
Note 4: - The voice of the animal with the face of a human said: 'come and see', and was looking to the South. Was the lion a character of Gods Kingship and the ox a character of Gods Offer of Sacrifice, the human face has the character of Gods Word, Christ in Gods Throne (as Jehovah in the Shekinah-cloud manifested His presence between the cherubim).

Note 5:A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny''. Wheat : barley = 1 : 3. A measure-"A chonix." While making food scarce, do not make it so much so that 'a chonix' (about a day's provision of wheat, variously estimated at two or three pints) shall not be obtainable "for a penny" (= denarius, eight and a half pence of our money in former days, probably the day's wages of a laborer).
three measures of barley for a penny-the cheaper and less nutritious grain, bought by the laborer who could not buy enough wheat for his family with his day's wages, a denarius, and, therefore, buys barley. It is obvious that people must live by the day, in order that they would repent and ask God for their provision, supply for their family. The same fact wwas evident with Gods people in the dessert around Gods Tabernacle: Christ!

Note 6: - 'hurt not the oil and the wine'. Oil from the olive-tree is the symbol of justice, peace and piety. The olive-tree symbolizes Gods care for His people; Rich.9:8,9. Oil is acquired by squeesing the olives from the olive-tree and is therefore the symbol of the faith in people which originate in humans by His Spirit by pressure or oppression. The same thing happens with the grapes from the wine-tendril; only by pressure in the winepress men acquire wine, also the symbol of His blood originate for humans by His Spirit by pressure or oppression. Wine and oil are medicine for wounds and cleanse from sin.

 King James Bible   << Revelation 6 >>

1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. 2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. 8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: 10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? 11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; 13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. 14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
